Ryuseikan is a private dojo committed to passing down the Dentokan arts and principles as taught by Roy Jerry Hobbs Sensei to Chris Spencer-Hicks Sensei
The name "Ryuseikan" means "Hall of the righteous willow" and is made up of three Chinese characters:
柳 Ryu meaning willow tree
正 sei meaning truth or justice
館 kan meaning a meeting hall or other public building.
The willow tree is traditionally used among Japanese martial artists as a metaphor for the concept of "ju" or suppleness and pliability that is key to jujutsu technique, the idea of bending with force and redirecting it as opposed to meeting it head on in a conflict.
There is a traditional fable of a martial artist who gained insight into this concept by observing the willow tree after heavy snowfall and seeing that while the weight of the snow had crushed and broken the branches of the other more rigid trees, the willow's sinuous branches had simply given way when it got too heavy and brushed it off, leaving them intact.
Many classical ryuha use the willow in their names, the most well known of which is the Yoshin Ryu (willow heart lineage) and its derivatives.
